Problem Statement

In Southern Senegal, near the Gambia River, the educational landscape is in need of a transformation. The client wanted a primary school that should be designed with a focus on sustainability and user comfort. The region's unique climate and community needs require a design that integrates locally sourced materials and passive cooling techniques, ensuring that classrooms remain comfortable for students throughout the year.

We designed the school with a standout feature being the school’s entrance, which employs a curvilinear geometry and bamboo architecture. This design choice not only provides a visually striking and playful space for children to gather, but also demonstrates the versatility and sustainability of bamboo—a material celebrated for its aesthetic appeal and environmental benefits.

The project draws inspiration from advanced studies in bamboo architecture, highlighting how this material can be harnessed to balance aesthetic beauty with functional and ecological considerations. By utilizing bamboo and other local resources, the school not only minimizes its environmental footprint but also supports the local economy and showcases the potential for sustainable architecture in rural settings.
